Businesses have a problem on their hands as employees and customers now simplify their social media lives. In this article we explore the burn-out that is occurring in social media and how businesses can deal with both their social media needs and an increasingly weary customer base. Eve Tahmincioglu describes how Marcia Brady, who just became a high school freshman, “is nervous about fitting in and making friends so she signs up for every club listed on the school bulletin board.” Tahmincioglu’s point is that everyone jumped on the social media train but opened themselves up too much and now they don’t want to invest any more time in it. They are burned-out. Just imagine what employees must be feeling as they have to now keep up with it in their jobs as well as at home with their friends and family. This may lead to an unfortunate place for businesses who attempted to become modern and embrace newer technologies.. they may need to scale back before they even get started. Dorie Clark offers that, “Many executives facing this tidal wave go in one of two directions: complete obsession...or panicked paralysis... Try to find the golden mean.” Tahmincioglu wrote, “Once you pick one main, general networking site, you might also consider finding a network that targets your profession or industry” This should help with the overload and get you on track with your marketing plans. To better understand the potential for social media backlash and how it affects your business, consider the following. Your employees and customers are facing social media burnout. A backlash towards simplicity is approaching for social media. As a result, your company has to be careful in its new found zeal for social media. Do not ask your employees to be your ubiquitous social cheerleaders. A social media backlash towards simplicity means focused marketing. Lastly, as employees simplify their social media lives, let them simplify it for the business as well.
